Paper: Using POSIX for Embedded Development
- Creating systems based on a POSIX RTOS, such as the QNX®
Neutrino® RTOS, enables the creation of reusable software assets –
making it possible to cut costs, improve productivity, and
accelerate product delivery. But how much of the POSIX standard
must your project support? This paper examines how to identify
which POSIX APIs your system requires and looks at ways to
maximize portability without sacrificing performance.

TOP NEWS OF THE MONTH: |
August is
typically a slow news month, but this August had more than its
share of important electronic design announcements. Green Hills
Software , for example, announced version 5.0 of its velOSity
microkernel and INTEGRITY RTOS. Significant additions in velOSity
and INTEGRITY 5.0 include enhancements for automotive,
resource-constrained and multiprocessing applications and support
for easier porting from legacy kernels. Release here
. National Instruments rounded off their annual 'NI Week'
in Austin, with a number of important announcements -
Circuit Cellar and Cypress Microsystems announced
their PSoC
High Integration Challenge 2004 . The contest pays over
$12,000 in prizes, and uses the Cypress MicroSystems PSoC™ device
(CY8C2xxxx devices). One of the nifty features is a free '
design kit ,' available from the site.
Finally, I-Logix and Keil Software announced UML
Design with Rhapsody and Vision . The two companies have
produced a free Webinar
on the product, which allows you to learn about UML and its
advantages for embedded design, based on an 8051 target.

FALL SHOWS - ON AND OFF THE INTERNET |
Fall is
show season, this year more than most. There are both real-world
events, as well as online webinars and seminars. Some of the most
interesting - Intel
Developer Forum , Sept. 7-9, San Francisco, CA (Learn about
Intel communications, embedded and PC technologies); Portable
Power , Sept. 12-14, San Francisco, CA (Learn about mobile and
power-reducing technologies); and, of course, Embedded
Systems Conf. , Sept. 13-16, Boston, MA (Learn about embedded
and network security).
On the Internet, as well, September is a great month for
conferences. Don't miss Techonline's M16C
VirtuaLab & Design Challenge on Sept. 8, a forum to learn
about the M16C architecture and compete for a $1000.00 First
Prize, as well as smaller prizes and T-Shirts. Quick links to
check for upcoming Webinars are:
- Techonline
Calendar - upcoming events from the leader in Webinars for
the embedded and DSP design communities.
- Netseminars
Calendar - online Webinars from CMP , focused more on
the enterprise and networking spaces than embedded systems per
se.
- Webinar
Calendar at eg3.com - our comprehensive list of online
Webinars, both from the media above as well as independent
vendor events.

COOL NEW WEB SITES: |
eg3.com 's mission is to research, identify, and
promote cool new Web resources - white papers, demo's, seminar's,
free code. etc. Here are the top new Web sites we have found in
the last month. EDN released their venerable Microprocessor
Field Guide , a comprehensive guide to all available
microprocessors. If you are an EDN subscriber, it arrived
as the 8/5/2004 issue - if not, use the PDF Web version.
We also found some very good online tutorials - FPGA's vs. ASIC's - What are the Trade Off's , AdvancedTCA Overview , and A Step-By-Step Guide to Developing USB I/O
Devices among others.
Amongst technology trends, keep your eye on RFID. We found two
good resources on RFID - RFID , a new book just released, and RFID News , a news portal. Perhaps this will spur
your mind to new ways that RFID can be used in imaginative
embedded technologies.
